SecureStarTM
INTEGRATED FRAUD PROTECTION
FOR EVERY AT-RISK DOCUMENT

SecureStar® Security Points
SecureStar® products represent a true integration of papermaking, inks and forms design in a concerted effort against document fraud. The resulting defense system fights against the methods criminals use to counterfeit or alter documents: Color copiers, personal computer scanners, laser printers and chemical erasure. No one can absolutely guarantee a fraud-proof document. But SecureStar® offers reliable and affordable protection. A fusion of covert and overt elements fortify the document so well, most criminals won't consider it a workable target.

Prepare each document for the perilous world of color copiers, scanners and solvents.
It's risky business to send defenseless checks and money orders out into the world. Computer scanners and color copiers have created a booming fraud industry where nearly anyone who can push a button or click a mouse can create a realistic counterfeit of most of the documents in circulation today.

Check fraud is the biggest problem . . .
Check fraud is a $10 billion-a-year problem. Over 500 million checks were counterfeited or altered last year, and the numbers grow larger by the day. And as if the direct losses aren't bad enough, the law states that your financial institution may be held liable for the losses incurred by the trusting parties who accepted the fraudulent check unless you take steps to protect your documents.

These days, unprotected documents don't stand a chance.
Virtually any document that could be altered or copied for personal or monetary gain is a potential target. SecureStar® makes it practical and affordable to protect every at-risk document issued by your financial institution. All SecureStar® documents are protected with the standard features shown on this page. Your highest-risk documents may require an extra measure of protection.

The features marked by this icon offer our strongest level of defense and are available for an additional charge, as are the items in the box below.

1. High Resolution Border
Fine linework is too intricate to reproduce by copier or scanner. When copied, detailed lines blend together and spaces fill.

2. Chemically Reactive Paper
Chemical erasure causes staining and discoloration that ruin the check. This chemical reaction is activated by keotone solvents, alcohols, trichlorethylene, alkalis, acids and bleaches.

3. Microprint Signature Line
The signature line isn't a lineit's actually the words "Authorized Signature" repeated in tiny, tiny type. The printing is so small, the letters blur to a dotted line when copied or scanned. The distinct "MP" near the signature line alerts the recipient to look for legible little words.

4. Warning Band and Padlock Icon
The padlock indicates that the document meets the voluntary security guidelines issued by the Financial Stationers Association. Protective details are identified and described on the back of the check, or in the warning band.

Fourdrinier Watermark
Watermarks are added to the paper during the paper making process. The result is a design with distinct variations in the amount of light that passes through the paper. This authentic watermark is invisible when the document lies flat on a table, but becomes quite evident when the paper is held vertically.
An authentic watermark is one of the most effective forms of fraud protection available today. An authentic watermark can't be duplicated on a copier or PC. Increasingly, watermarks are being used on currency and other important documents that are targets for counterfeiters.

Fluorescent Fibers & Visible Fibers
Paper contains fibers only visible under black light as well as fibers visible in normal light.

Thermochromic Ink
The padlock icon on the back of the document is printed with ink that changes appearance when the temperature is increased. Placing a thumb over the lock for a few seconds will trigger a reaction that alters the appearance of the icon. (Instructions are printed near the lock.)

Safety Paper Background
This familiar background uses paper mill applied colors that are difficult to reproduce. Inaccurate copies are easily recognized. Available in Blue, Green, Yellow, Gray or Pink.

Regulation CC Endorsement

Disclaimer
This feature is printed on the back of all Official Checks.

Bleed-Through Inks
Consecutive numbering on documents can be printed with an ink that allows the number to partially show through to the back of the document. Numbers that are visible on both sides of the paper create an extra challenge for criminals attempting to reproduce the document. Laser printers and photocopiers can't achieve this effect.

Erasol Ink
Any attempt to erase the handwritten information will also erase the background printing. The resulting colorless spots are a blatant indication that an alteration has occurred.

Modulus Check Digit Consecutive Numbering
Available in several configurations.

Security Thread Paper
Distinct vertical threads are actually woven into the fibers of the paper. This is the same type of thread used in most U.S. currency. This technologically advanced paper is virtually impossible to reproduce with convincing accuracy. Illegal copies are obvious.

The following are some additional security techniques that may be employed upon request to deter duplication and counterfeiting. Use of these items will constitute an additional charge.
  • Laid Lines Lines printed on the paper that make alterations easy to detect.
  • Void Pantograph Security "void" or other custom message that appears when exposed in a color copier.
  • Laser Treatment - A treatment to paper that makes it difficult to remove toner from laser printed documents.
  • Holograms A three-dimensional foil graphic designed to be an obvious deterrent to the criminal. Minimum quantities apply. Call for details.
  • Fluorescent Inks Printing visible only under ultraviolet light.
